Dan Aykroyd’s journey into the world of Vodka
Crystal Head Vodka is distinctive for its iconic, skull-shaped bottle complete with pieces of crystal melted into the glass to ensure clarity. The brand launched in 2008 as a partnership between Aykroyd and John Alexander. Aykroyd has said that his interest in creating his own brand began when he couldn't find his favourite tequila brand – Patron – in his native Canada. He began importing it himself and the sideline led him into the vodka business as well.
He founded Crystal Head with a view to bringing his interests together - alcohol, the paranormal and creativity. Considering it a strong business investment as well, he borrowed money from his daughters' college funds (now paid back, so it seems he was proven correct), and dived right in. His goal was to create something premium. He told The Wall Street Journal: "It's a premium luxury product. We would not put a polluted product into that bottle."
He's remained true to that premium ethos, using only the most pristine ingredients, from fresh Newfoundland water in the liquid to Herkimer diamonds in the filtration process.
